This summer I worked at the American Meteorological Society's policy office in DC. My project had two parts. The first part was a valuation study on the benefits of hydrometeorological instruments in health. I worked with The World Bank Group, NOAA, and NASA on this project. The second part was quantifying the economic contribution of hospitals to regional economies by calculating their full economic contribution and the cost associated with damages sustained by hospital during weather events.

This summer has been a great experience in so many ways. I have learned to love the DC environment and the people there. The seminars and talks we got the chance to attend with the UVA students were very useful in understanding how DC policy really works and it showed us all what to expect if we enter this field. After this summer I can safely say that I intend to pursue a career that will allow me to work with science policy. The numerous possibilities and the huge impact one can have on the world are aspects that really attract me to science policy.
