Biological Engineering Major
United States Patent and Trade Office
This summer I worked at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where I was in the biotechnology technology center evaluating biotech patent applications and learning about patent legal doctrine and how it gets applied. As a biological engineer and future patent attorney, it was really exciting to learn about the process, specifically in biotech, and get more experience with patent searching and legal writing. I also did a detail in the Office of Policy and International Affairs (OPIA), where I was able to help the office prepare for international patent policy negotiations and research a policy paper on the subject matter eligibility of holograms. This experience opened me up to working with patents in an international setting and to pursuing policy work in the future.
