This summer I interned in the United States Senate for Senator John Hickenlooper (D-CO) and Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). In the Office of Senator Hickenlooper, I was a member of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) legislative team, where I had the opportunity to write memorandums on HELP Committee hearings, prepare co-sponsorship recommendations for relevant legislation, and prepare briefings for staff members. In the Office of Senator Blumenthal I worked primarily on Judiciary, national security, and international relations projects, including preparing a memo for the Senator on nuclear threats from the Russia-Ukraine War. In addition to these legislative tasks, I interacted with constituent affairs by answering phone calls, drafting email responses to constituents, and giving tours of the Capitol. It was an incredible experience to work in the Senate this summer and see the policy process behind the defining political events of our era- from the passing of landmark bipartisan gun control legislation to the Supreme Court’s Dobb’s decision. From this summer, I solidified my desire to pursue a career a policy moving forward, both on Capitol Hill and beyond.
