DC Public Schools
As an Urban Education Leaders Internship Program (UELIP) Associate for the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), I was able to apply public policy skills in a school district context to advance equity-related initiatives in the District. In this position I worked with the Equity, Strategy, and Programming (ESP) team to focus on equity-related policies and programs that are student facing. I connected with school districts across the nation and community organizations in the District to learn about best practices for creating and sustaining equitable schools and supports. My projects included creating supports for event programming designed for male-identifying students of color and researching framework models for a strategic, meaningful approach to equity-related policies and strategies. My time with DCPS highlighted how central offices in school districts bring the aims of education policy into fruition and how collaboration amongst personnel in central offices bring about innovative ideas. Leaving the ESP team, I am more confident in advancing the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of education—from the classroom to central office to Capitol Hill.
