Government Accountability Office

This summer I worked as an intern at the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) within their Health Care Team. I contributed to a team of analysts performing an audit of the Veterans Healthcare Administration, and their performance of health care market assessments mandated by the VA MISSION Act of 2018. Throughout the summer, I drafted our team’s commitment letter, analyzed VA market assessment data and documents, crafted question sets for interviews with Hill staffers, and coordinated with communications consultants to draft interactive graphics for our final report. At the end of my internship, I was able to present my work to over 60 directors, analysts, and fellow-interns. Working at GAO was an incredibly rewarding and eye-opening experience. My work required me to research the bipartisan history of one of the most significant VA healthcare bills in the past several years and understand the various stakeholders affected by its various titles. I was able to develop an appreciation for how policy can affect healthcare access, quality, and continuity. I also formed several lasting relationships with both analysts and GAO and my fellow interns.
