Congressional Research Service

I was at the Congressional Research Service working as an environmental policy analysist intern within the Resources, Science, and Industry division. I worked with my supervisor to assist Congress on a range of topics including various air pollution emissions standards; interpretations of the Clean Air Act's statutory language and proposed amendments; and the United States' broad approach to climate policy (especially at an international scale). I've been able to assist with requests made by congressional staff, research and compile data, and attend a number of congressional committee hearings.

I've also had the opportunity to shadow a staff member for a meeting in a Senator's office. Much of my work this summer has revolved around researching and preparing materials on the 28th Conference of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, scheduled to take place this fall in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. CRS plays a critical role in preparing congressional delegations for the international climate conferences, and I've learned about the structure, history, and significance of the conferences and the roles that representatives from the U.S. Administration and Congress play at them. From my summer work, I hope to incorporate the study of international environmental law and treaty negotiations into my own academic "portfolio" as I transition back to school and beyond.
