This summer I interned at the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association (PhRMA) in the policy and research department. PhRMA is a trade organization representing some of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in America, and my internship began at an especially transformative time for the pharmaceutical industry, with the effects of the Inflation Reduction Act changing the landscape every day. As a result, I was given the opportunity to work on a wide range of issues, from drug price setting to new Medicaid transparency rules. My experience gave me a better understanding of the pharmaceutical industry as a whole, and the different players responsible for bringing a drug from creation to distribution. Beyond my work, I was lucky to work with such a warm and welcoming team who were invested in my own professional development and success. I was able to speak with many individuals who followed my intended career path, while also exploring other options through my various conversations. All in all, my experience greatly expanded my understanding of American healthcare, drug innovation, and the consequences of a single policy on an entire industry.
