This summer I interned in the research department of the IMF, and my project involved looking at how quantitative easing affects portfolio flows. Because I worked independently most of the time, I was able to make my own decisions at each step of the process. I think I got a good sense of what economic research entails.
Besides working on my project I also attended many seminars in which economists presented their work. In addition, I had the chance to meet with many professionals at the Fund, including the managing director. Speaking with economists who are making decisions that have a huge impact on the world gave me a new perspective on what the Fund does and was one of my favorite parts of the internship.
