Julia M. Toro Law Firm
This summer I interned at the Julia M. Toro Law Firm, a bilingual office which practices immigration law, specializing in deportation defense and asylum claims. As an intern I conducted background research for asylum cases, gathered evidence for deportation defenses, met with clients, and observed court proceedings. I collaborated with and learned from coworkers at many different stages in their career, including lawyers, paralegals, and other interns. I learned about the American immigration system and the recent changes, in the context of increasing politicization and a decrease in admission of asylum seekers. I gained insight into the legal system, legal careers, international perspectives, and was able to improve my professional Spanish skills. I am grateful to the MIT Washington Summer Internship Program for allowing me this opportunity.
